BALTIMORE, MD— A Baltimore resident is celebrating after winning the last $50,000 instant top prize on the Maryland Lottery’s popular THE BIG SPIN scratch-off game. While he didn’t get a chance to spin the Big Spin Wheel at Lottery headquarters, his $50,000 win was enough to bring joy to his day.
The fortunate turn of events occurred after the man stopped at Selma’s Liquors on Washington Boulevard in Baltimore following work. After playing his midday numbers, he purchased a few scratch-off tickets. Noticing a man in front of him buying four THE BIG SPIN tickets, he became curious and bought two of the $5 games himself.
Instead of scratching the entire play area, the man scratched the prize check area and scanned the tickets. The first ticket didn’t yield a win, but the second delivered a surprise.
“The first one wasn’t a winner,” he shared, smiling as he recounted his experience to Lottery officials. “But the second one said, ‘Congratulations, $50,000 winner.’”
Excited yet in disbelief, the married father asked the cashier to confirm his win. The cashier did so with enthusiasm, leaving the winner pleasantly shocked.
“When he told me that, I looked at him and said, ‘See you later,’” the winner recalled, laughing. He quickly shared the news with his wife, who responded excitedly when she answered his call. “He called and said, ‘You’re rich,’” she said, joining him at Lottery headquarters to claim the prize.
Although unfamiliar with the Big Spin Wheel aspect of the game, the winner expressed satisfaction with his $50,000 prize. As of now, he hasn’t decided how he will spend his newfound wealth.
Selma’s Liquors, located at 4600 Washington Boulevard, will also benefit from the win. The store will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize winning ticket.
- New Jersey Teens Host 10th Annual Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer Research
PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J. — Two local teens, Arjun and Rohan Khanna, are once again rallying their community for a cause close to their hearts. On Sunday, August 18, 2024, the brothers will host their 10th annual lemonade stand at 7 Haskel Drive, with all proceeds benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a leading organization in the fight against childhood cancer.
From 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Khanna family will be serving lemonade at the event, which has become a beloved summer tradition in Princeton Junction. Over the past decade, the brothers’ lemonade stand has raised more than $21,000 for ALSF, contributing to the foundation’s mission of funding research and supporting families affected by childhood cancer.
The event has grown significantly since it first began in 2014, with support from the West Windsor Police and Fire Departments, as well as friends, neighbors, and the wider community. ALSF, inspired by the story of four-year-old Alex Scott, who started her own lemonade stand to raise money for cancer research, has raised over $300 million and funded more than 1,500 research projects.
The Khanna brothers’ lemonade stand is more than just a neighborhood fundraiser; it’s a symbol of community spirit and hope. Each cup of lemonade sold helps advance the search for a cure, providing crucial support to children and families facing the challenges of cancer.
Community members are invited to stop by the lemonade stand on Sunday to show their support and enjoy a refreshing drink for a worthy cause. The event will take place at 7 Haskel Drive in Princeton Junction, New Jersey, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
For those in the area, this is an opportunity to join a local tradition that makes a significant impact. All proceeds from the event will go directly to ALSF, continuing the Khanna brothers’ efforts to help find a cure for childhood cancer.
- $1.1 Million in Narcotics Seized in Central Jersey Drug Bust
HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A month-long investigation into cocaine distribution in Hamilton Township has resulted in the arrest of a local resident and the seizure of narcotics valued at over $1.1 million, Acting Mercer County Prosecutor Theresa L. Hilton announced.
James Nalbone Jr., 35, of Hamilton, was taken into custody on August 7, 2024, following an investigation by the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, with support from the Drug Enforcement Administration and police departments in Ewing, Hamilton, and Trenton. Nalbone was arrested without incident at his residence on Byron Avenue.
A search of Nalbone's home, conducted with the assistance of K-9 officer Indy, revealed a substantial cache of drugs and weapons. Detectives uncovered six kilograms of suspected cocaine, 130 pounds of suspected marijuana, 2,000 suspected oxycodone pills, three handguns, a defaced ghost gun, and approximately $65,000 in cash.
Additionally, drug paraphernalia, including scales, packaging materials, and hydraulic presses used for cocaine distribution, was seized.
Further investigation led authorities to Nalbone’s vehicle, a Lincoln MKZ, where another handgun was discovered. Documents found in the car indicated that Nalbone was renting a storage unit nearby. A subsequent search of the storage facility on Quakerbridge Road, prompted by a positive alert from a narcotics canine, led to the discovery of an additional 12 kilograms of cocaine, 20 pounds of marijuana, and a large quantity of edible marijuana.
Nalbone faces 18 charges related to narcotics and weapons offenses, as well as a charge of money laundering. The prosecutor’s office has filed a motion to detain him pending trial.
The total estimated street value of the seized drugs is $1,102,500. The cocaine alone is valued at approximately $630,000, the marijuana at $450,000, and the oxycodone at $22,500.
